What are issues that trigger the check engine light?
If your check engine light flashes on, you don't need to automatically assume that your engine is on the brink of total failure. However, it'll be best to visit the shop for computerized diagnostics so that any developing problems can be identified and addressed before they escalate. At All Tune & Lube, we use advanced diagnostic equipment to ensure that we accurately pinpoint the problem. Then we can provide top-quality repairs.
Common Reasons the Check Engine Light Turns On
The check engine light often illuminates due to catalytic converter trouble. Because the catalytic converter helps to prevent the car from excessively polluting, it's important that it stays in strong condition. Signs of a catalytic converter problem include a sulphurous odor, decreasing gas mileage, and worsening acceleration.
Problems with certain sensors in your car may also cause the check engine light to come on. A bad oxygen sensor may trigger the light, and can cause misfiring and rough idling. Another potential trigger is a faulty mass airflow sensor, which can cause your engine to hesitate as you accelerate.
Your check engine light could also turn on due to problems with spark plugs. Automobiles manufactured after the year 2000 can commonly go 100,000 miles before they need new plugs. On the other hand, older vehicles usually need their plugs replaced more often. The light could also get triggered by bad ignition coils. With failing ignition coils, you may notice misfiring and poor acceleration.
Although it may seem strange, there are instances in which a loose gas cap causes the light to illuminate. After each time you fill up your tank, you'll want to be sure that your cap is returned to a tightly secured position. A loose/missing gas cap can allow fuel to evaporate before your engine gets the chance to put it to use.
And if you have a faulty battery that is causing low voltage at the computer, then your check engine light may illuminate.
