The Importance of Tire Maintenance
Tire maintenance generally isn't one of the first things that comes to mind when people talk about auto maintenance, but it is vital to the health of a car and a driver's ability to properly control it. Tires are what connect vehicles to the ground and if they are in bad shape the ability to brake and steer will also be bad. Use these three tire maintenance tips to ensure your tires remain in good condition throughout their life, and if it is time for new tires don't delay in purchasing them so that you can maintain a safe ride for yourself and your passengers.
Monitor Tire Pressure
Do you know the tire pressure rating for your vehicle's tires? If you don't you should find out so that you can properly monitor your tire pressure. The PSI rating for your tires can usually be found in your owner's manual or on the inside of the driver side door jam. Low tire pressure will cause the outsides of the tire's tread to wear out faster than normal, creating an unsafe tire. Low PSI will also cause a reduction in fuel efficiency and cornering control. If the PSI is too high the center of the tire's tread will wear out early. This is especially dangerous because it reduces braking power and the ability to cornering properly. Some new vehicles have a PSI indicator light on the dash that will warn drivers of low PSI, but if your car is not equipped with that than you can purchase a handheld tool for less than $10 and stores easy in your glovebox.
Every once in awhile it is important to give your tires a visual check to look for things like uneven wear, which can cause alignment problems and under or over inflation issues. If your tires seem a little low on air check for damage to the tire. Search for nails, screws or other debris stuck in the tread and inspect the side walls for ripped, corroded or bubbling rubber. If you see or feel any of these signs of tire damage, it may be time for new tires from an authorized tire dealer.
One of the most important things you can do to ensure your tires last as long as they are suppose to is a tire rotation about once every 10,000 miles. This will prevent two tires from wearing out before the others. This uneven tire wear happens because if a car is front wheel drive the front tires will wear out quicker than the rear ones, and vice versa.
