8 Simple Tips for Boosting MPGs
With gas prices predicted to rise in 2021, it's particularly important that you're getting the most miles possible out of each gallon of gas. Here are eight easy ways to improve fuel-efficiency.
Replace Air Filter
By getting a new air filter every 15,000 miles, it'll be much easier for a sufficient amount of air to reach your combustion chamber. This will keep your engine from burning up additional gas to make up for a shortage of air.
New Fuel Filter
To make sure that pollutants aren't harming performance and gas mileage, you should get a new fuel filter every 25,000 to 30,000 miles.
Correct Fuel Grade
If your car calls for mid-grade gas or better, you'll want to always adhere to this specification. Otherwise, you could see a reduction in gas mileage, and there's a chance that engine issues could develop.
New Spark Plugs
Old spark plugs are more likely to repeatedly misfire, which can result in a lot of fuel going to waste. Vehicles manufactured after 2000 can often go 100,000 miles before they need new plugs, while older ones usually need plug replacement more often.
To get rid of contaminants from your injectors and intake valves, you can try using a fuel additive. You'll just want to make sure you use an additive that is compatible with your car.
Correct Oil Type
You should always use the type of oil that is recommended for your engine. If you use a different type, there could be an increase in friction. This could cause your engine to work harder, which may reduce gas mileage.
Proper Tire Inflation
Because soft rubber requires more power to roll forward, under-inflated tires can cause your gas mileage to noticeably dip.
Properly Fitting Gas Cap
It's important that your gas cap is on tight so that fuel doesn't evaporate before your engine gets a chance to run on it.
