Common Signs of Engine Trouble

When it first seems like something is awry with your engine, it's best to soon visit the shop for computerized diagnostics. By being proactive, you'll reduce the risk of the problem quickly escalating and necessitating major repairs. At All Tune & Lube, our local mechanics can accurately diagnose your engine trouble and then immediately get to work on repairing it.

The Check Engine Light

Although an illuminated check engine light doesn't always mean that the engine failure is imminent, it's still smart to have diagnostics completed so that the issue can hopefully be nipped in the bud. Common reasons the check engine light comes on include problems with catalytic converters, oxygen sensors, and mass airflow sensors.

Common Symptoms of an Engine Problem

You'll want to keep an ear out for abnormal sounds coming from your engine. One cause for concern is a repetitious tapping noise. This could mean that dangerously low oil is causing metal-on-metal contact, which may lead to major damage to moving parts. If your car is leaking oil, you'll want to get that taken care of as soon as possible.

Power loss is another sign of significant engine trouble. You don't automatically need to worry if your old car with high miles has slowly lost some power as it has aged. But an abrupt and significant power loss is a symptom of a major problem, such as worn-out pistons. You can also get clues about possible engine problems from discolored exhaust smoke. Blue-tinted smoke suggests an oil leak. Black smoke is a sign that too much fuel is burning up. White smoke is an indication of an internal coolant leak. Because overheating could lead to serious engine damage, such as a cracked block, it's very important that your cooling system stays in excellent condition. Indications of cooling system trouble include smoke emerging from under your hood, as well as a high reading on your temperature gauge.
