Car Needs Transmission ServiceFor your engine to remain in strong condition for as long as possible, it's very important that you keep up with basic maintenance tasks. You can consult your owner's manual to see what types of maintenance should be done at what mileage points. At All Tune & Lube, our local mechanics can quickly and affordably conduct maintenance that will help to keep your engine in excellent shape.

Important Engine Maintenance Tasks

One of the kindest things you can do for your engine is keep it running on the right amount of clean oil. By always following your oil change schedule, it's far less likely that your engine's moving parts will become damaged by metal-on-metal contact. Proper lubrication also helps to optimize fuel-efficiency and keep the engine at a safe temperature. Conventional oil usually needs to be changed between 3,000 and 5,000 miles. Synthetic oil doesn't need to be changed as often and provides superior protection.

Cooling system service will help to prevent your engine from overheating, which is an issue that could cause a cracked block. A general guideline is that coolant gets exchanged every 30,000 miles, but you'll want to check your owner's manual for your car's exact needs.

Another important task is to replace filters as necessary. Air filters should be changed out every 12,000 to 15,000 miles. This will allow the right amount of air to get to the combustion chamber. If there's insufficient airflow, fuel may burn incorrectly, causing gas mileage to decrease and emissions to increase. It's also important to change fuel filters every 20,000 to 30,000 miles so that pollutants don't harm engine performance and fuel-economy.

From time to time, you'll want to take a peek at your engine's belts. If you see that a belt is cracked or otherwise in rough shape, then you should have a mechanic take a look. Timing belts typically need to be replaced somewhere between 60,000 and 105,000 miles. If you don't replace your timing belt on schedule, then there's a serious risk of it snapping and causing major engine problems.
