Do I need transmission repair now?

When you first notice a symptom of transmission trouble, you'll want to bring it to a mechanic's attention. If you wait, the problem could quickly worsen and require repairs that are far more expensive than should've been necessary. At All Tune & Lube, our local mechanics are experts at diagnosing and repairing transmission issues.

Indications of Transmission Trouble

One of the most obvious signs of a transmission issue is that gears are slipping. This could be occurring because of a problem with transmission fluid. If contaminants are impeding the flow of transmission fluid, then there might not be an adequate amount of hydraulic pressure to keep your car in gear. It's possible that a transmission fluid flush will take care of this issue, but there's also a chance that you'll need more in-depth work to be done.

By checking your transmission fluid each month, you may become aware of issues that should be inspected by a mechanic. Generally, transmission fluid should be checked with the car still running. This is because transmission fluid is prone to contracting as it cools down, which can then lead to an inaccurate reading on how much fluid you're actually driving with. If the fluid has gotten concerningly low, then you may be dealing with a transmission fluid leak. Such leaks should always be fixed quickly so that you don't risk major transmission problems emerging. If your fluid appears dark or smells burnt, then you'll want to figure out what the underlying problem is.

In manual transmissions, there are particular symptoms of trouble to be aware of. Grinding suggests clutch failure, but you may only need to get a clutch adjustment. If you have a clutch master cylinder problem, then it could become very difficult to put your stick shift into gear. Clutch trouble could also be present if you're noticing issues with your clutch pedal, such as sponginess or stickiness.
