Why You Shouldn't Skip Scheduled Maintenance
With every new vehicle purchased these days, the manufacturer will recommend scheduled maintenance at certain mileage points. This is also referred to as 30/60/90K maintenance because the rule-of-thumb for most cars is to get this service every 30,000 miles. A lot of people choose to ignore this maintenance schedule, assuming that it's simply a gimmick to get them to spend more money at the dealership. However, keeping this schedule can actually extend the life of your car and save you possibly thousands of dollars in auto repairs over time. In fact, a lot of manufacturers feel this maintenance is so important that they won't honor the warranty unless you follow the schedule.
Why is scheduled maintenance necessary?
The idea behind scheduled maintenance follows the old adage, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” As the vehicle ages, this auto service gives your mechanic the chance to identify and fix small problems before they turn into big ones. Periodic maintenance and replacement of fluids also help keep the car running at its best, and replacing worn parts before they fail can prevent more expensive repairs down the road. A perfect example is the timing belt, which will likely be replaced during the 90,000-mile maintenance visit. This belt usually costs several hundred dollars to replace, but if the belt breaks while you're driving, it can do thousands of dollars' worth of damage to the engine.
What happens during scheduled maintenance?
The actual maintenance and repairs will depend on the age of the vehicle and the wear on the parts. Usually, your mechanic begins with a full inspection of your vehicle to identify problems, along with replacing or topping off fluids and replacing worn parts. Depending on the need, the mechanic may do any of the following:
- Checking belts and hoses (and replacing as necessary)
- Changing the oil
- Inspecting and/or rotating tires
- Replacing filters
- Replacing spark plugs and/or spark plug wires
- Flushing, replacing or topping off fluids (e.g., brake fluid, transmission fluid, coolant)
A trusted mechanic won't do any repairs that aren't necessary, but will communicate with you about any unscheduled repairs that need to be done during the maintenance visit.
Does the maintenance have to be done at the dealership?
No, it doesn't—even though some dealers like to give you that impression. Of course the dealer wants you to have the maintenance performed at the dealership's service department, but the warranty remains in effect as long as you keep the maintenance schedule by taking the car into any qualified local auto repair shop. Not only can this save you lots of money over dealer rates, but it also means you can have the work performed by someone you know and trust.
That said, for best results, all auto maintenance and repairs should only be done by trained, qualified technicians.
