Why Won't My Car Start?

Why Won't My Car Start? You're in a hurry. You run out the door, throw your briefcase in the back seat and jump behind the wheel. You turn the key and the car won't start. Time to cancel that meeting. But why won't the car start? There are numerous problems that could prevent a vehicle from being able to start so let's take a peek at some of the more common issues so that you can try and diagnose your problem. Of course your best and quickest option is likely to call your local auto repair shop and have them identify and repair the issue!

Dead Battery

One of the most common reasons a car will fail to start is a dead battery. The battery is what gets everything in the car going and if it loses power nothing will be able to work. You probably have a dead battery if no lights or accessories will work and when you turn the key nothing happens.

Faulty Ignition

If your ignition is worn out or if it malfunctions you will be able to get the car started. Signs of a bad ignition include the key not turning, flickering dash lights, or accessories working but the car will turn over but not start.

Bad Starter

If you turn the key and only hear a single click, or a click, click, click there is a good chance that your starter has gone bad.

Bad Alternator

The alternator charges your battery while the car is moving. If the alternator goes bad your battery will quickly drain and the car won't be able to start.

Fuel System Problem

There are a few things that could go wrong with the fuel system. If you have a clogged fuel filter the gas won't be able to get to the engine or if your fuel pump fails there is no way for the car to pump gas to the engine either.

Having a problem with a car starting is one of the most discouraging issues, but can often times be fixed quickly and inexpensively.
